Making cocoa farming more sustainable
The ALDI SOUTH Group is proud to be a Mission Ally of Tony’s Open Chain, an initiative we joined in 2021 as the first international discount retailer. We support their mission to drive systemic change in the cocoa sector and support farmer cooperatives in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
The cocoa beans for ALDI’s Choceur CHOCO CHANGER are sourced through Tony’s Open Chain, which upholds 5 Sourcing Principles to ensure a responsible cocoa supply chain.

Traceable beans
All cocoa beans are 100% traceable and sourced directly from farmer cooperatives. As a result, we know where the beans are grown and under what circumstances.
A higher price
Farmers receive an additional premium on top of the Fairtrade bean price per kilogramme. As a result, the farmers earn a living income and invest in their cocoa farms.
Strong farmers
We promote professional cocoa farming cooperatives, giving the farmers and their self-organised groups the power to structurally change inequality.
Long term perspective
We commit to cooperatives and farmers for at least five years, giving them income security and enabling them to make better, long-term decisions about their business.
Productivity & Quality
We support farmers to professionalise – by improving their yields through training and investments via Tony’s Open Chain and providing access to markets.
About Tony’s
Tony’s Open Chain wants to change the norm in chocolate and transform cocoa supply chains for the better. The industry-led, collaborative initiative supports brands in adopting sustainable purchasing practices and improving working conditions and environmental standards along the supply chain.
Tony’s Open Chain encourages companies to change their cocoa purchasing practices. They can facilitate systemic change by taking responsibility and adopting a fair and equal sourcing model.
Pre-competitive multistakeholder collaboration is essential to address the issues in cocoa supply chains. Together, we have more power to change the industry from within, confronting challenges head-on and establishing transparency.
Poverty, child labour, structural exploitation and even forced labour are the results of the unequally divided chocolate supply chain in West Africa.
The 5 Sourcing Principles are an approach towards more equality and protecting human rights.
The principles interact with each other to strengthen the positive impact but also to counteract possible side effects. All five must be combined to ensure long-term change and more equal business relationships.

The ALDI SOUTH Group and ALDI Nord were the first international discount retailers to join the Open Chain by Tony Chocolonely in 2020. As a mission ally, we go beyond certification and believe in direct, equal relationships throughout the entire cocoa chain. Our Choceur CHOCO CHANGER allows farmers to earn a living income.
Selling more of their cocoa, sugar and vanilla on Fairtrade terms enables them to get fairer trading conditions, stimulate social change and engage in environmental protection.
